I'm just curious... I know it's best to keep the propane outdoors but if that's not an option, how dangerous is it to keep indoors where your working???

I have done it for 5 years, but I make sure the lines are not touching the ground. I don't see a problem

From the MSDS for Propane:
"Unusual fire and explosion hazards: DANGER! Fires impinging (direct flame) on the outside surface of unprotected pressure storage vessels of Propane can be very dangerous. Direct flame exposure on the container wall can cause an explosion by BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion). This is a catastrophic failure of the vessel releasing the contents in a massive fireball and explosion. The resulting fire and explosion can result in severe equipment damage and personnel injury or death over a large area around the vessel. For massive fires in large areas, use unmanned hose holder or monitor nozzles; if this is not possible, withdraw from the area and allow fire to burn. Special Firefighting Procedures: Because of the potential for a BLEVE, evacuation of non-emergency personnel is essential. If water is not available for cooling or protection of vessel exposures, evacuate the area." Basically, get that propane tank the hell out of your house! |

All that says Mike is keep it out from in front of your torch . Just use some un-common sense about it dont have hoses where hot glass or = will be even accidently ie the ground ( unless protected) use enough ventilation to disperse all unburnt feul out .....

Thanks for your responses guys, you've been really helpful! I'm trying to figure out which location will be the best for me to work! I definitely will not chance the propane indoors with me if I have better, safer options... I am overly cautious by nature but wanted to weigh out my options!
Thanks again... sara |

Nubblet - and what happens if there is a fire someplace else in the house?
I'll tell you: KABOOM. Killing the fire department personnel. Destroying your house and possibly the fire truck(s). Severely damaging the houses next door. And to top it off, your insurance will get cancelled and they won't pay for the damage. Bottom line: it is illegal to keep more than two (2) one pound tanks of propane/MAPP in your house at any given time. If your garage is attached, the garage is considered part of the house, and you cannot keep the tank there either. One of these days, someone is going to blow themselves (and probably someone else as well) up, and this is going to have a trickle down effect on all of us. DON'T KEEP YOUR PROPANE IN YOUR HOUSE OR STUDIO. IT BELONGS OUTSIDE. |
