So, I just got a gold plated face mask, with dido(not real dido) and realized that when i have my shade 3 glasses on with my mask, it feels like i have shade 5 dido's on. Does any one know if this combo is as good as wearing just shade 5???? Either way, cant see shit, need another light i guess.

no and no.
The gold plated face shield is called Didymium II, but does not contain any didymium at all. The transmission spectrum of the product doesn't even come anywhere near that of true didymium. Here's some information about the Didymium II product: www.auralens.com/e_gwdidymium2.html |

Thanks for the quick reply. My question was worded badly sorry. what i meant was, i have shade 3 real dido's, while wearing the mask, would this push the the tint to something comparable to a shade 5dido's, (cuz i have the real dido's w 3)??

the faceshield you've got DOES raise the "welder's shade" equivalency.. at least in the range of visible light.
if aura's "oberon didydium II" chart would show what the lens blocks at wavelengths higher than 1000nm, more could be told. the faceshield SEEMS to me to block quite a bit of IR and UV.. i say this because i've been using one for the last year or so, and i no longer have torch tan on my face, nor do i ever get a heat reddened face. the sodium flare blocking properties of the faceshield is kinda a joke.. but.. it sure does make my face feel a helluva lot better. it reduces the sodium flare, yes.. it seems more pink than orange.. and.. i feel this product would work fine for average demonstration purposes. anywho.. z--seth |

Thats what i was getting at firekist, too bad there is not a chart to show how much tint is in those shields, shade#3, shade#5...etc
I am really amazed how much cooler glassblowing with the mask, but sometimes i feel like a boy in the bubble. Has anyone heard of a similiar product that would sit on the tourch, THIS WOULD BE TIGHT!!!! |

From what I understand gold coatings do NOT block or filter they reflect Ir and Uv.

alright, glassies www.oberoncompany.com/OBE...aPage.html
i'm not sure what that'll tell you, but that's oberon's info page. the gold shield doesn't block nearly as much IR as a welder's shade 2 (based on info from aura's web site, where IR transmittance is said to be "up to 25%" for the shield, whereas it is at a welder's shade 2 has an average of 5%. I do suggest reading these couple paragraphs very carefully.. "up to" and "average" can be very loaded describers.) personally i'd rather have IR REFLECTED on my eyewear than absorbed so the glasses wouldn't get so hot.. but mike doesn't like that idea (if i remember the email correctly) it's not like this would be any darker than a shade 7. i'm pretty sure "reflecting" and "blocking" can be used interchangably in this situation. "reflecting" light from hitting you is "blocking" it from hitting you.. eh? the matter at hand are the percentages being blocked, as well as what is being blocked. by the way, i had a welder's shade 5 plastic face shield.. it melted pretty badly. maybe they make them out of a different material for high temp work.. but.. i still swear by the gold face shield in front of my 286's shade 4. the glasses block UV from hitting my eyes. the glasses block the sodium flare from interfering with me seeing my work. the glasses transmit less than 2.5% of the IR. the glasses also reduce the visible light to the vicinity of 12%... white hot boro is brighter than i want to be looking at through even "shade 4" (i know.. they're not really shade 4) by putting a face shield on, i protect my face against UV and IR. i protect my face and glasses from impact. i further reduce the light, UV, and IR getting to my eyes. if this is a bad setup, mike, please explain why.. because i surely am at a loss as to why it would be. keep on thinkin, yall! z--seth |
